(Not) eating animals is not just an ethical question but also a political one. For many reasons – because nonhuman animals are political actors, because eating practices are interconnected with understandings of (group) identity, because consumption patterns in the Netherlands (and other rich countries) contribute to exploiting animals, the climate crisis and loss of biodiversity, including deforestation in Brazil which leads to the displacement of humans and other animals, and because eating differently is connected to living differently and working towards a better future. Discussions about eating animals – think for example about the Dutch farmers’ protests, Black veganism, the connection between masculinity and eating animals – expose larger power structures in society. In this research project I analyze these structures, that oppress humans and other animals, focusing specifically on the role of language.
I investigate the questions at stake in different ways. With academic research, translated into the academic publications below, books for a general audience like Verwar het niet met afwezigheid (Uitgeverij Cossee, 2022) about political silences, and essays for newspapers and magazines. I also contribute to the public debate by organizing conferences and symposia, and by initiating art projects. This page gives an overview of the different components of the project, which runs from 2021 to 2025, and will be updated regularly.
The politics of (not) eating animals is supported by a Veni Grant from the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and I conduct my research at the University of Amsterdam. I am grateful to both institutions.
Het (niet) eten van dieren is niet alleen een ethische zaak maar ook een politieke. Onder andere omdat niet-menselijke dieren politieke actoren zijn, omdat eetpraktijken verbonden zijn met groepsidentiteit, omdat we met ons Nederlandse consumptiepatroon de niet-menselijke dieren uitbuiten en bijdragen aan klimaatverandering en verlies van biodiversiteit, omdat dat consumptiepatroon ook de mensen en andere dieren in het regenwoud in Brazilië treft, omdat anders eten verbonden is met anders leren leven als mensen in relatie tot de planeet. Discussies over het eten van dieren - denk aan de boerenprotesten, zwart veganisme, mannelijkheid die in het gedrang komt als er geen dieren meer op tafel komen - leggen machtsstructuren in de samenleving bloot. In dit onderzoeksproject richt ik me op die structuren, die de levens van groepen mensen en niet-menselijke dieren sturen, en speciaal de rol die taal erin speelt.
Ik onderzoek deze en andere vragen op verschillende manieren. Door academisch onderzoek, dat een weerslag vindt in de publicaties hieronder. Door te schrijven voor algemeen publiek, zoals het boek Verwar het niet met afwezigheid (Uitgeverij Cossee, 2022) over politieke stiltes, en essays voor Nederlandse tijdschriften en kranten. Door maatschappelijke dialoog in gang te zetten, zoals met de organisatie van conferenties en symposia. En door kunstprojecten te initiëren. Op deze pagina zijn de links te vinden naar de verschillende poten van het onderzoek. Het project loopt van september 2021 tot september 2025, dus er zal in de komende tijd meer verschijnen.
Het project wordt gefinancierd door de NWO, die me een Veni-beurs gaven, en ik voer het onderzoek uit aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Beide ben ik zeer erkentelijk.
